BACKGROUND: On the basis of this report, the L.A. City Council declared our sanctuary building to be a historic-cultural monument in late 2003. The building was deemed to be valuable in two respects: - being an exemplar of a past architectural style (“Classic Revival”), and
- having an important historical association — evoking a once-thriving Jewish community in Venice and the Ocean Park area.
ABOUT THE SUMMARY: The new summary outlines Mishkon’s moral responsibility to treat the building’s “character-defining” features with respect and care. It distills the report’s overall approach, while focusing on the currently hot topic of making changes to the facility. In so doing, it boils down what was originally presented to Mishkon in 539 loose-leaf pages.
