ON OCTOBER 29, our waterproofing contractor for the sanctuary’s south wall tied up the last remaining loose end, in the project it had begun the previous summer. It did so in conjunction with its annual maintenance visit. At least, the south wall project is complete!

Waterproofing and curbing at seam between wall and parking lot
This was the last remaining section of the wall to receive a treatment at its base. This treatment waterproofed the seam along the parking lot surface, and it also added a cement curb. As rainwater runs down the wall, the curb now directs that water away from the seam and into the parking lot.
There were three steps to this treatment, as follows.
1. Apply a bonding agent to the seam.
Bonding agent: SpecChem’s Strong Bond
2. Apply a waterproofing membrane to the seam.
Waterproofing membrane: Neptune Coatings’ WetSuit 1 PART
3. Apply the cement curb over the seam.
Cement: Combination of Spec Mix Type S mortar and Rapid Set Cement All non-shrink grout
(Judging from appearances, I have my doubts that these same three steps were taken for the other wall sections last year. Another crew from this contractor did that work, and I was not present. The curbing is more uneven and sparser.)
Maintenance of the seam between wall and parking lot
Over time, as the sun’s heat causes the varied materials to expand and contract, cracks develop. Annual maintenance features the caulking of those cracks.
This caulk is a slightly darker gray than last year’s cement curb.
Caulk: Sika’s Sikaflex 1a elastomeric joint sealant.
