Inventory of surfaces containing lead: Sanctuary building

IN OUR HISTORIC sanctuary building, most of the surfaces do not appear to contain an amount of lead that warrants special treatment during rehabilitation or renovation projects. However, a few of the surfaces would require abatement if disturbed.

During the past 7 years or so, three surveys have been conducted. They have all used a standard lead XRF-gun sampling technique. By law, the findings are classified in one of three ways:

1. Lead Safe = The presence of lead, if any, is below the threshold of requiring special precautions or clean-up.

2. Lead-containing material = The contractor must prepare a Cal/OSHA lead compliance plan for the protection of its workers; precautions must be taken to prevent the spread of lead dust. (“Lead abatement” is not required.)

3. Lead-based material = Requires abatement; it must be handled by a California state-licensed Lead Contractor for any work that will disturb it.

Areas tested:  Plaster on the north, east, and west walls

Finding:  Lead Safe.

Area tested:  Plaster on the south wall

Finding:  Lead-containing material.

Area tested:  Painted door to the kitchen

Finding:  Lead-containing material.

Area tested:  Painted door to the main corridor

Finding:  Lead-containing material.

Basement men's lounge

Areas tested:  East wall, south wall, and west baseboard

Finding:  Lead Safe.

Basement main corridor

Areas tested:  Walls and plaster

Finding:  Lead Safe.

Basement men’s restroom

Area tested:  Plaster on upper portion of walls

Finding:  Lead Safe.

 

Area tested:  Ceramic tile on lower portion of walls

Finding:  Lead-containing material.

Office (also known as men’s lounge, storage room)

Area tested:  Walls, baseboard

Finding:  Lead Safe.

Area tested:  All planned renovation areas

Finding:  Lead Safe levels for most; but significant lead was detected in the glaze of certain colors of the wall tiles in at least one restroom. (Detailed report is forthcoming.)
