Awning replacement

AS WE PREPARE to refurbish the façade of our historic sanctuary building, it seems appropriate to also re-cover the awning with a fabric whose color will better match the forthcoming color of the wall. The current color is royal blue.

Below the jump, I discuss the various considerations.…

This awning was fabricated in 2007 by Superior Awning. (Yes, I actually found the original order in a file box!)

(As usual, click/tap on an image to enlarge it.)

On July 30, the ad-hoc Color Committee reconvened to consider the color-matching question, and I joined with them. We met with a sales rep from Superior Awning, who brought his book of sunbrella color samples. (Sunbrella is the standard fabric for awnings—due to its durability, resistance to fading, and ease of maintenance.) He reassured us that our frame was still in good condition.

The Committee decided that, to the extent that the façade restoration project is intended to make our building look attractive, the awning’s covering should indeed be replaced. And of the sunbrella fabric choices available, the most compatible one seemed to be black (with white lettering).

Black would tie in with the front fence, which is not shown in this drawing. (And the darker the color, the longer sunbrella fabric seems to last.)

If the awning is re-covered, its frame (which is visible from below, when you stand near the doors and look up) would be repainted with black semi-gloss paint. The new white lettering would be traced from the existing lettering, and then silk-screened on.

I have since received a bid from Superior Awning. The stated cost includes unmounting and remounting. The turnaround time would be 4–6 weeks. The fabric and workmanship would carry a 10-year replacement warranty, and the thread would carry a lifetime warranty.
