How to make the preschool facility more functional

OUR PRESCHOOL DIRECTOR has requested that we modify the school building by putting a door in one wall and removing some storage shelving. 

Below the jump, I describe April’s idea. (NOTE: This is a speculative post that is exploring a possible project; no funds have been allocated at this time.)…

Here is the floor plan from 2003. As you can see, the restroom can be accessed from each classroom by going out to the main corridor. There is closet space behind the restroom. (Currently that closet is fully divided down the middle, separating the two classroom areas even when the closet doors are open.)

When a child needs to use the restroom, a teacher needs to accompany them, which means getting coverage from another staff member before leaving the classroom.

Now, here is the proposed modification. The back wall of the restroom would be replaced by a door, and the closet divider would be partially removed, while the closet space would be reduced by more than half. Hence the restroom could be accessed directly from each classroom. 

Why does this matter? Because a teacher who stands in the doorway could thereby monitor children both in the classroom and in the restroom. The same teacher could cover both needs. That would be a much more efficient use of the preschool’s staff resources.
