IT TURNS OUT that there is competition for the otherwise unused space above the stairwell! In addition to the storage room idea that I described previously, it could be used to augment the play yard.

Below the jump, I discuss the second idea. (NOTE: This is a speculative post that is exploring a possible project; no funds have been allocated at this time.)…
Our preschool director, April Woods, today pointed out to me that during Sukkot dinners and other events that are held in the yard, functional space is at a premium. Not to mention that the limited play-yard size is the biggest constraint upon the capacity of our preschool.
April suggests that after a platform is constructed that spans the stairwell at ground level, the space could be opened up to the play yard on two sides.
Admittedly that is a worthy cause, too. Yet I have my doubts that we can reclaim the Social Hall without additional storage space.
Hmm. Maybe there is room for compromise (pun intended). Perhaps the unused space above the stairwell should be repurposed partly for storage, and partly for functional (shaded) outdoor social space.
