Cylindrical white room air purifiers (Condition Report)

THE ST. JOSEPH CENTER recently donated several air purifiers to Mishkon.

Below the jump, this post documents the main features of these units. It also points to the online user manual and other resources.…

The basics

These units are the Carrier 18S model, dating from 2020.

They have three types of filter. The outer one is a dust filter that needs to be vacuumed clean occasionally. They also have a high-efficiency filter (roughly equivalent to a hospital-grade MERV-16, which is not as thorough as a HEPA filter); it captures nearly all smoke, dust, bacteria, viruses, pollen, etc. And they have a charcoal filter that catches odors.

There are 18 fan speeds; the highest speed is “18.”

Judging from their identical specs, our model seems equivalent to what is currently being sold under the newer model name RMAP-ST:

The following information is explicitly for RMAP-ST, but it should pertain to the 18S model, as well.

• Do not use the AUTO setting; it is not appropriate for Mishkon’s needs.

The unit should be turned on whenever a group is in the room, and turned off as soon as people leave. When on, it should be set to the highest fan speed whose noise level is tolerable. For the Social Hall, that is typically 16–18.

The unit should be positioned at least 12" away from any wall.

• It takes about 15 seconds to power up fully.

• A light will come on to indicate that a filter needs to be replaced.

• Other indicator lights reflect certain aspects of indoor air quality, but those sensors do not measure airborne pathogens.
